Experience the Al Hijaz Steam Train Ride in Wadi Rum

For those interested in exploring the historical and cultural aspects of Jordan, the Al Hijaz Steam Train ride in Wadi Rum offers a unique and immersive experience. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you plan your adventure.

Historical Background

The Hijaz Railway was constructed by the Ottoman Empire between 1900 and 1908 to facilitate pilgrimages to the Muslim holy places. During the Great Arab Revolt in 1916, led by Sharif Hussein bin Ali and his sons, the railway became a strategic target as the revolt fighters sought independence from the Ottoman rule. Some of the significant battles of this revolt occurred in Wadi Rum.

The Train Ride Experience

Today, the Al Hijaz Steam Train ride recreates events from the Great Arab Revolt. The adventure begins when you board the authentic Hijaz Railway train, now powered by a diesel engine, rather than steam. The journey includes an engaging reenactment where riders witness actors portraying revolt fighters attacking the train, reminiscent of the historical 1916 events.

Getting There

If you’re traveling from Amman, follow the Desert Highway/Route 15/Route 47M towards Wadi Rum. You will need to make a U-turn off the highway, then turn right onto Wadi Rum Road, following signs for Ad Disa. The train ride starts 22 km from this turn.

 • Starting Point Coordinates : 29°39’37.3”N 35°28’57.5”E Google Maps Link

If you have a Jordan Pass, the train ride is included for free, but you must book the ride at the same time you purchase the Jordan Pass; it cannot be added afterward (details at Jordan Pass).

The Al Hijaz Steam Train operates on Sundays and Wednesdays at 3 PM, and visitors are required to arrive at the station by 2:45 PM
