We're guides based in Wadi Musa, the town at the Petra gate. We're here every day, we host guests every week, and we talk to travellers all the time. So here's our straight answer, and what the official advice says, so you can decide with the full picture.

As of 29 Oct 2026. Check the official pages before you book and before you fly.

What we see on the ground

Petra and Wadi Rum are open and running. Guests walk the Siq, ride in the jeeps and sleep in the camps. In our experience, none of our guests has faced any danger, including during the regional tensions this year, and the travellers we speak to say the same.

Petra had 281,123 visitors from January to July 2026, down 3.7% on the same period of 2025 (Petra News Agency figures). It's quieter than usual, which many guests tell us they enjoy.

Why we mention government advisories

Some governments currently advise extra caution for Jordan, and we mention it for one practical reason: insurance. Some travel insurance policies change their cover, or exclude a destination, when your government advises against travel. So read your own government's advice, then read your policy's Jordan terms before you book.

As of 29 Oct 2026, the US rates Jordan Level 3, "Reconsider travel," updated 23 Oct 2026. The UK advises against travel only within 3 km of the Syrian border. Canada says to exercise a high degree of caution. The areas they flag are mainly the borders with Syria and Iraq, and none of the three names Petra or Wadi Rum.

Practical tips

These are the habits we'd recommend for any trip, anywhere. Buy insurance that covers cancellation and medical care, and check its Jordan terms. Register with your embassy. Keep your flights flexible, since regional events can occasionally cause cancellations. Avoid demonstrations, which often happen on Friday afternoons. And don't drive on rural roads at night.

FAQ

Is Jordan safe to visit right now?

In our experience, yes: our guests are travelling and enjoying Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea without problems. Governments advise caution, so read your own government's advice and check your insurance before you book.

Is Jordan safe for Americans?

Our American guests are travelling here. The US government rates Jordan Level 3, "Reconsider travel," as of 23 Oct 2026, so read the full advisory and check your insurance.

Is Petra safe?

Petra isn't named in the US, UK or Canadian advisories we read, and it's open and welcoming visitors every day.

Is Wadi Rum safe?

It isn't named in those advisories either. Go with a local guide, because the main practical risks are heat, navigation and the rare flash flood.

Is Jordan safe for solo women?

A large share of our guests are women, and many of them travel solo. In our experience they feel safe and welcome here. We'd give the same tips as anywhere: use trusted drivers, book your first night's stay in advance, and dress modestly at religious sites. See what to wear in Jordan.
